Four-Wire Trailer Wiring: A Guide to Connecting Your Trailer

Whether you’re hauling a full-sized camper to the lake or a massive load of firewood for delivery, properly connecting your trailer to your vehicle is essential for a safe, smooth ride. Four-wire trailer wiring gives you access to not only the basics of lighting and turning, but also provides a connection for an extra brake light, providing an extra layer of safety. Understanding the basics of four-wire trailer wiring instructions can help you get your trailer up and running in no time.

Essential Supplies for Wiring Your Trailer

Before you begin wiring your trailer with four-wire trailer wiring instructions, make sure you have all the supplies you need to complete your project safely. You will need a fully functioning ground wire, two tail lights, two turn signals, a white auxiliary wire, and two brake lights. Additionally, you will need to choose a compatible connector for your trailer. Once you have double-checked that all the necessary supplies are ready for installation, you can begin wiring your trailer.

Steps for Installing Your Connectors

The first step in wiring a trailer with four-wire trailer wiring instructions is to prepare the connectors. Start by mounting the left and right tail lights and the left and right turn signals. Make sure the lights and signals are mounted in an appropriate location so they are visible and accessible when needed. Once the lights and signals are mounted, prepare the connectors by attaching each of them to their corresponding wires.

Securing the Ground Wire

Next, secure the ground wire. This is the most important step in making sure your trailer and your vehicle are connected correctly. By securing the ground wire, you ensure a safe connection between the two. Start by running the ground wire from the back of the vehicle to the frame of the trailer. Secure the wire with clips spaced no more than 12-inches apart. Once the wire is secure, attach the ground wire to the trailer frame and the trailer hitch.

Connecting the Auxiliary Wire

Now it's time to connect the auxiliary wire. Start by running the auxiliary wire from the back of the vehicle down the side of the trailer. Then, connect the wire to the trailer's breakaway switch. This wire helps to activate the brakes of the trailer if it becomes detached from the vehicle. Make sure to secure the wire using clips and tie-wraps throughout its length.

Installing the Brake Lights

The last step in your four-wire trailer wiring instructions is the installation of the brake lights. Begin by mounting the red and yellow brake lights on either side of the trailer. Then, run the red brake light wire down the right side of the trailer and the yellow brake light wire down the left side. Secure both wires to the frame of the trailer using clips and tie-wraps. Attach the red brake light wire to the red terminal of the controller and the yellow brake light wire to the yellow terminal. Lastly, make sure everything is connected securely, and your trailer is now ready for use.

Making sure your trailer is wired safely and securely is essential for a safe road trip. With this guide to four-wire trailer wiring instructions, you’ll be able to confidently connect your trailer and enjoy your journey.
